Root Canals

Root Canals

The phrase “root canal” has earned a notorious connotation over the years as a patient’s worst nightmare. In reality, root canal therapy can be your best friend, particularly at a time when you are in pain.

Every tooth has at least one root, and every root has a small, narrow tunnel within that runs the length of the root known as a “canal.” The canal (and a large chamber near the top of the tooth) contains a network of nerves, tissue, and blood vessels known as the “pulp.” When the pulp becomes infected, what develops is known as an abscess. Abscesses are often accompanied by significant pain and swelling.

The purpose of root canal therapy is to remove the bacterial food source—in this case, the pulp. With the pulp removed from the tooth, bacteria no longer have an environment in which they can survive and multiply.

Root canal therapy is usually a painless process, as the tooth is given a local anesthetic prior to pulp removal. Most patients will feel tremendous relief once the process is complete. In today’s world, there is little to fear when it comes to root canal therapy. If you are experiencing pain and/or swelling around a tooth or in your jaw, please give us a call and let our doctors show you how easy pain relief can be.
